ADB President Takehiko Nakao reaffirmed the Bank's support for reconstruction when he saw for himself the devastated city of Tacloban in Leyte Province, Philippines. The visit came three months after Typhoon Haiyan killed more than 6,000 people and destroyed much of the region's infrastructure.

(Life is getting back to normal. A flying tin roof hit my legs during the supertyphoon. It was almost amputated, luckily after three months, my wounds are already healing.)

VO: Asian Development Bank has approved nearly $900 million in total for emergency grants and loans to assist communities affected by the typhoon.

ADB President Takehiko Nakao visited the city of Tacloban and other nearby devastated areas to personally survey the damages and emphasize the Bank’s continued support for relief and reconstruction.

It was a very shocking scenery of devastation… I was impressed by the strength of the people and also smiles of the people, I feel that life is coming back to this city and I really hope that the ADB can be a partner to the rebuilding of the town again.

VO: ADB is demonstrating its commitment to reconstruction in the region by opening an extension office in Tacloban. The office was inaugurated by President Nakao.

This is very important development that we have now a new office in Tacloban… it will have a strong communication with the government outreach in Tacloban and aslo local authorities including the provinces and communities. It is important to monitor the implementation including the appropriate usage of money.
