Philippines

Philippines: Third Sector Overview* gives a good definition of civil society in the Philippines. The site is maintained by the Asia Pacific Philanthropy* Consortium an informal network of organizations dedicated to promoting the flow and effectiveness of philanthropy in the region.

The Caucus of Development NGO Networks (CODE-NGO*) provides a good assessment of the Philippine civil society* by outlining its history and the role that it plays in Philippine society. CODE-NGO is a coalition of development NGOs in the Philippines, comprising members of seven national networks and four regional networks, representing more than 2,500 NGOs, and other CSOs all over the country.

The Philippine Council for NGO Certification (PCNC*) is a service organization whose main function is to certify non-profit organizations and other CSOs that meet established minimum criteria for financial management and accountability. See list of NGOs* certified by the PCNC.

The Philippine European Solidarity Centre (PESC-KSP*) supports Philippine NGOs and other civil society, in their efforts to build a just and sustainable society in the country. PESC-KSP maintains the Philippine NGO* page that provides easy access to information on civil society in the Philippines.

Synergos Institute* published The Rise of Philippine NGOs in Managing Development Assistance* [ PDF ], an assessment of NGO experiences in managing development assistance in the Philippines. The Synergos Institute is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening community development foundations and other organizations in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The United States International Grantmaking* (USIG) facilitates effective and responsible international grant-making by U.S. foundations. The USIG features country information* that describes the legal framework of nonprofit organizations in several countries.

The Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS) is an academic institute that aims to enhance cooperation and build relationships of organizations in Asia and the Pacific. The site offers an article on, Civil Society and Democratization in the Philippines.* [ PDF ]

The Asian NGO Coalition for Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ANGOC) is a regional NGO association of national and regional NGO networks from Asian countries actively engaged in food security, agrarian reform, sustainable agriculture and rural development activities. ANGOC features a report on Capacity Building Needs of Southern NGOs.
