Supreme Court Chief Justice at ADB Anti-Money Laundering workshop
Chief Justice Reynato Puno of the Supreme Court of the Philippines delivered the keynote address [ PDF: 43kb | 8 pages ] at the recent 2nd Workshop on Strenghtening the Philippine Anti-money Laundering Regime at the Asian Development Bank headquarters. ADB Trike Fund Project Turnover in Puerto Princesa City
Mayor Edward Hagedorn of Puerto Princesa City accepts a tricycle replica from Ms. Yue-Lang Feng, Principal Environment Specialist of the Asian Development Bank in the recent ceremonial turnover of a $240,000 ADB-funded project to reduce air and noise pollution in the city. The project also provided skills and alternative livelihood to tricycle operators and established a revolving fund known as "Trike Fund" which provides soft financing for tricycle drivers to upgrade their tricycle engines and enhance their entrepreneurial skills. The grant is from ADB's Poverty and Environment Program which supports poverty-environment linkages and effective approaches for poverty reduction. Read the speech.

ADB-funded Kidapawan City Integrated Transport Terminal Opens
The P64 million Kidapawan City Integrated Transport Terminal, financed under the Asian Development Bank'(ADB) $30 million loan for the Mindanao Basic Urban Services Sector Project (MBUSSP), was recently inaugurated by Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) officials led by Undersecretary Austere Panadero, and City Mayor Rodolfo Gantuangco. All buses, jeepneys, vans and multicabs passing through the city will converge at the new terminal. The ADB-funded project comprises 41 subprojects such as the construction and rehabilitation of public markets, gymnasiums, transport terminals, cultural centers, water supply and municipal buildings in 39 Mindanao local government units, including the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Inauguration of Rizal Resettlement Site for Pasig River Informal Settlers
About 1,000 former informal settlers living along the Pasig River in Manila will be relocated to Barangay San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal as part of the government's effort to rehabilitate the Pasig River and provide them a better quality of life with formal, secure and affordable resettlement housing.

Inauguration of ADB-funded Smokey Mountain Material Recovery Facility
Tom Crouch, Country Director, Asian Development Bank (ADB) Philippine Country Office, (at right) congratulates the Smokey Mountain community in Tondo for the inauguration of their first green, environmentally sound material recovery facility. In the audience are (from left) Ambassador Stale Risa, Norway; Hugh Faulkner, Founder & President of Sustainable Project Management, the Swiss-based NGO implementing the project; and Ambassador and Mrs. Peter Sutter, Switzerland. The facility is part of the ADB's Smokey Mountain Remediation and Development Program, supported by ADB's Poverty and Environment Program, which is financed by Norway and Sweden. The Program will provide livelihood opportunities, based on recycling material from the inactive dump, while at the same time addressing environmental hazards. The Smokey Mountain dump was closed in 1990 after accepting 2 million tons of refuse over almost 40 years but remains toxic and exposes the thousands of community members to severe health risks.

ADB-funded Panabo City Bus & Jeepney Terminal
The P38 million Panabo City Bus and Jeepney Terminal, built under the Mindanao Basic Urban Services Sector Project, was turned over yesterday by the contractor, JITS Construction Corp. to the city government. Asst. Sec. Brian Yamsuan of the Department of Interior and Local Government (speaking at the podium) and Mayor Rey Gavina (seated, third from left) led government officials who attended the event.

European ambassadors visit ADB's Metro Manila projects.
The ambassadors from Belgium, France and Italy ride the new Pasig River ferry service which was supported by loans from Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the Pasig River Environmental Management and Rehabilitation Sector Development Program. ADB funded the ferry stations that will initially serve two 150-seat, air-conditioned ferries. From left (first row) are Patrick Pillon, ADB Executive Director; Ambassador Gérard Chesnel, France; Atty. Zoilo Andin Jr., deputy director, Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission; (second row) Ambassador Grégoire Vardakis, Belgium; and Ambassador Rubens Fedele, Italy. The ambassadors also visited a resettlement housing and a materials recovery facility at the former Smokey Mountain garbage site; and community-based projects in Caloocan and Malabon financed under the Strategic Private Sector Partnerships for Urban Poverty Reduction (STEP UP).

ADB Governor for Germany Visits Smokey Mountain Recycling Project
The Honorable Karin Kortman, Parliamentary State Secretary, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, who is Governor for Germany in the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) Board of Governors, pours cement on the new site of a new materials recovery facility (MRF) in Smokey Mountain funded by the ADB's Poverty and Environment Program for the Sambayanan Kristianong Muling Pagkabuhay (Parish of the Risen Christ) cooperative.

The project, which is being implemented by Sustainable Project Management (SPM) Philippines, aims to improve the lives of some 30,000 poor families in the area. With Governor Kortman are SPM Philippines' Bert Guevarra, Mike Lindfield, ADB Principal Urban Development Specialist, and Sebastian Paust, ADB Alternate Executive Director (3rd to 5th from left, respectively).
