East Asia

The People’s Republic of China (PRC) was particularly successful in reducing poverty as a result of its rapid economic growth and geographically targeted pro-poor growth approach.

ADB's poverty reduction strategy in China strongly supports pro-poor growth through infrastructure in the poorer western and central regions of the country. In addition, ADB is promoting programs that address environmental poverty caused by flooding and soil degradation and water and air pollution in the rural and urban areas respectively.

Poverty in landlocked Mongolia is characterized by reduced income opportunities, and at the same time, human development achievements are being challenged by low funding and the need for sector reforms.

In Mongolia, ADB's program as major donor is broader than in PRC, supporting particularly rural development, education and infrastructure, including energy and heating facilities.

Did you know? Mongolia - under the commodity price boom - extended its social protetcion system to become unaffordable. When the crisis hit, major reforms were done to better target and rationalize the programs. This paper [PDF: 193kb | 14 pages] was written as input to the Hanoi conference on the social impact of the crisis.
