David Dollar
is Head of the Macroeconomics and Growth Group in the Research Department of the
World Bank. His recent paper "Growth Is Good for the Poor" (co-authored with Aart
Kraay) shows that growth spurred by globalization generally raises the income
of the poor proportionally, and hence is a powerful force for poverty reduction.
He co-authored with Lant Pritchett the World Bank study, Assessing Aid: What Works,
What Doesn't, and Why. He has also written a book and several papers on the topics
of Trade Openness, Growth, and Development. Dollar was the World Bank's policy
advisor to Viet Nam during a period of intense reform, adjustment, and opening
to the international economy. Dollar has been an Assistant Professor of Economics
at UCLA and a Visiting Professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in
Beijing. He has a Ph.D. in Economics from New York University and a B.A. in Chinese
History and Language from Dartmouth College.
