Vijay
Naidu
Professor
Vijay Naidu is currently Director of the Center for Development Studies in the
School of Social and Economic Development at the University of the South Pacific
(USP). Born and educated in Suva, Fiji, Prof. Naidu completed his undergraduate
studies in social science and received an MA degree in Political Sociology with
distinction at USP. He earned his doctorate in Sociology of Development at the
University of Sussex, UK. Prof. Naidu has taught at USP since 1974. He has been
Dean of Foundation Studies, Head of the School, and Pro-Vice Chancellor. He has
researched and published in the areas of Ethnic Relations, Migration, Development,
Poverty, Citizenship, and Higher Education. Prof. Naidu has advised regional governments,
civil society organizations, and regional and international organizations. In
1991 he was a member and subcommittee chair of the Poverty Task Force in Fiji.
From March1998 to June1999 he led a team of specialists in writing Fiji's draft
Poverty Alleviation and Eradication Strategy Plan, commissioned by Fiji's Ministry
of National Planning and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
