MDGs and Global Partnership
Working together in pursuit of the goals

In the context of global agreements on aid financing, sustainable development, MDGs and peace, and aid harmonization and alignment, a global partnership on the MDGs has emerged.

Partner countries, bilateral donors, and international organizations and multilateral development banks are taking up specific roles and responsibilities to promote the achievements of the MDGs.

Role of Partner Countries
The global partnership on the MDGs gives full responsibility for the achievements of MDGs 1-7 to the developing partner countries. They are responsible for putting in place an environment for achieving the MDGs through

  • relevant poverty reduction and development strategies,
  • sound macroeconomic and social policies,
  • adequate and focused investments,
  • good knowledge application,
  • effective implementation mechanisms, and
  • transparent MDG monitoring.

Role of Bilateral Donors and Multilateral Organizations
While the partner countries are responsible for achieving results toward the MDGs, the bilateral donors and multilateral organizations as well as other stakeholders (including private sector) in the global development partnership ensures trade, finance, aid, and knowledge facilitate achievement of the goals.

MDG 8 targets include:

  • increasing the size and effectiveness of development aid and targeting it better to support systemic poverty reduction results of partner countries,
  • improving rule-based, predictable, non-discriminatory regional and global trading and financial systems,
  • addressing the special needs of least developed, landlocked, and small island countries,
  • dealing comprehensively with debt problems,
  • developing special programs to address problems of the youth and the unemployed, and
  • in cooperation with the private sector - providing access to affordable essential drugs and broadening the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) for the poor

Multilateral institutions monitor progress made toward the achievement of MDGs. They also champion MDG advocacy and mainstreaming.

  • The World Bank is supporting the Global MDG Monitoring report*
  • Specialized UN institutions are promoting sector reports on MDGs
  • UNDP is promoting national MDG reports*
  • Regional development banks are supporting MDG knowledge products relevant to their respective region. For example, ADB, UNESCAP and UNDP (link to the partnership page) have engaged in a partnership to monitor MDG progress in Asia and the Pacific.

The Development Assistance Committee* (DAC) of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) monitors data on aid flows and donor policies.

Do you know: The ADB, ESCAP and UNDP released the 2008 MDG Report for Asia and the Pacific in April 2008.
