The Pacific Islands

Over the past decade, poverty reduction in ADB's 14 Pacific partner countries has had mixed results. Given their small population and remote distances these countries face significant challenges in generating broad-based and sustained economic growth. Family support systems are eroding, resulting in major social dimensions of poverty. Poverty is now a significant and growing issue in many Pacific countries, with poverty incidences of more than 25% in most.

Responding to the priorities of the poor, ADB's Pacific Strategy (2005 - 2009) [ PDF: 473kb | 107 pages ] highlights differences in the region and addresses common challenges. Operational support relevant to poverty reduction is given in the fishery, small enterprise, vocational training and infrastructure sectors.

Did you know? An ADB project aims to provide socioeconomic support to the vulnerable population of the Cook Islands, the Marshall Islands, and Tonga, to alleviate the impact of the economic crises. It will also assist the governments in building capacity to develop and implement effective safety net programs.
