South Asia

South Asia, particularly India and Bangladesh, have made remarkable progress in reducing income poverty during the last 10 years. However, achieving the non-income Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and reducing non-income poverty are still a major concern in the region.

Lack of national peace and security aggravates the poverty situation in Nepal and Sri Lanka. In some regions of Sri Lanka, India, Maldives and Bangladesh, poverty is also related to vulnerability to natural disasters such as Tsunami and flooding. In Bhutan, poverty is also associated with harsh living conditions in the mountainous areas.

ADB's program in the region supports pro-poor growth through infrastructure financing and rural development, as well as support to human development (particularly education) and urban improvement (municipal services).

Did you know?  A recent ADB publication, Understanding Poverty in India, provides a comprehensive poverty profile for India under its new "inclusive growth" strategy. It discusses the government's specific poverty reduction programs, as well as the impact of its social, financial, and physical infrastructure programs on poverty reduction and inclusive growth. The studies in this book were conducted by the India Development Foundation and the National Council of Applied Economic Research, in cooperation with ADB.
