South Asia

South Asia, particularly India and Bangladesh, have made remarkable progress in reducing income poverty during the last 10 years. However, achieving the non-income Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and reducing non-income poverty are still a major concern in the region.

Lack of national peace and security aggravates the poverty situation in Nepal and Sri Lanka. In some regions of Sri Lanka, India, Maldives and Bangladesh, poverty is also related to vulnerability to natural disasters such as Tsunami and flooding. In Bhutan, poverty is also associated with harsh living conditions in the mountainous areas.

ADB's program in the region supports pro-poor growth through infrastructure financing and rural development, as well as support to human development (particularly education) and urban improvement (municipal services).

Do you know: An ADB technical assistance financed by the Poverty Reduction Cooperation Fund strengthened 127 community groups and local NGOs to deliver micro-irrigation to more than 2,220 poor households in Nepal. It is recommended that the experiences of this technical assistance be up-scaled by the Government through the ongoing ADB loan for Community Managed Irrigated Agriculture Sector Project.
