Southeast Asia

For 20 years, the Southeast Asian region (comprised of Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) made continuous progress in reducing income poverty and enhancing achievements towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The Greater Mekong Subregion, including Thailand and Yunnan province of the People's Republic of China, provides an illustrative success story in ADB's support to regional cooperation.

To support the poverty reduction efforts in Southeast Asia, ADB actively promotes:

  • infrastructure for poverty reduction, focusing on national and rural transport networks and renewable energy
  • rural and natural resources development, emphasizing forestry to enhance income opportunities of indigenous people and ethnic minorities
  • social development, with programs in education, health and strong gender mainstreaming activities
  • urban services
Did you know? An ADB study assesses the social impact of the economic crisis in the Philippines. The findings suggest that although the Philippine economy did not slide to recession during the crisis, its impact on the economy and poverty across population groups was, nonetheless, severe.
