Southeast Asia

For 20 years, the Southeast Asian region (comprised of Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) made continuous progress in reducing income poverty and enhancing achievements towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The Greater Mekong Subregion, including Thailand and Yunnan province of the People’s Republic of China, provides an illustrative success story in ADB’s support to regional cooperation.

To support the poverty reduction efforts in Southeast Asia, ADB actively promotes:

  • infrastructure for poverty reduction, focusing on national and rural transport networks and renewable energy
  • rural and natural resources development, emphasizing forestry to enhance income opportunities of indigenous people and ethnic minorities
  • social development, with programs in education, health and strong gender mainstreaming activities
  • urban services
Did you know? The Thai government has been active in devising policies and measures to mitigate the impacts of global economic crisis from hitting the country too hard. The measures range from fiscal stimulus to accommodative monetary policies. A paper [PDF: 1,151kb | 19 pages] written for the Hanoi conference on the social impact of the economic slowdown assesses these strategies.
