Project Data Sheet (PDS): Details

Description

The objectives of the Project is to support the Government's poverty reduction efforts through the creation of sustainable farm and nonfarm employment. A corollary objective of the Project is to transform successful cooperatives of the RPCP into sustainable microfinance institutions (known as DBBs). The Project comprises four components: (i) the formation of landless poor societies and the provision of microfinancial services to society members; (ii) project management; (iii) the declining support of the RPCP; and (iv) support of a pilot DBB to be created under a TA proposed to accompany the Project. The Project aims to mobilize and provide support for more than 500,000 members to start microenterprises and income-generating activities. Of these members, 246,000 would be new members and the rest would be existing participants of the RPCP. The Project area will cover 152 thanas (sub-districts), of which 70 thanas are depressed and underdeveloped with a large proportion of poor. The remaining 82 thanas comprise the RPCP areas and require a small amount as further support until they become self-sustainable.
