Description The Project aims at rehabilitating (i) about 140 kms of State Highways (SH1 and SH10); and (ii) 100 kms of rural access roads.
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy The state of West Bengal is strategically located to play a pivotal and catalytic role in promoting subregional economic cooperation and reducing poverty in the subregion. The Project is part of Country Strategy and Program for India.

Progress Toward Outcome Improvement of transport infrastructure is progressing through civil works and consultancy contracts.

Description of Project Outputs Improve state highways ,Corridor access , Subregional connectivity and Rural communities access
Status of Implementation Progress (Outputs, Activities, and Issues) SH1 completed. SH10 and RARs packages are ongoing. The progress of civil contracts has been slow due to slow mobilization of equipment and personnel by contractors. Efforts are being made to expedite the implementation of the Project. The implementation progress has improved and the project is expected to be completed within 2011.

Procurement The civil works contract packages had been procured in accordance with ADB's Guidelines for Procurement following international competitive bidding procedures. The contracts for the rural access roads had been procured under local competitive bidding procedures.
