Description The Project will assist the Government in improving the quality and efficiency of basic education through better qualified teachers. The specific objectives are to improve the quality and coverage of teacher training by building institutional capacity for a teacher training system that encompasses preservice, in-service, and recurrent training of primary school teachers; and to improve access for girls and other disadvantaged groups.
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy The project is in line with ADB's overall/regional as well as country strategy of poverty reduction. Human development is a key input for poverty reduction. The project constitutes major contribution to meet the 7th goal of the Education For All (EFA) and takes well care of the 10th plan intent to provide training to all teachers, enforce system of teaching license, developing standards of quality education, and upgrading pre-qualification of primary teachers to the level of grade 12.
