Project Data Sheet (PDS): Overview

Sri Lanka is currently experiencing an acute shortage of housing stock. This issue was highlighted in the report submitted by the Presidential Task Force on Housing and Urban Development in 1998, which estimated a shortfall of 171,600 housing units. This has been further confirmed by sectoral research conducted in-house by NDB and through an independent research agency. One of the major factors contributing towards the significant gap between demand and supply of housing stock in the country is the lack of affordable housing finance. Based on its study, NDB estimates the market shortfall in housing finance to be around Rs 16 billion ($190 million equivalent). There is a need for a new institution focusing on providing affordable housing finance, especially to the lower and middle income markets. Read More
