Description The overall objective of the Project is to enhance public health and the environment through assistance to improve water supply infrastructure in Kosrae and Yap, and wastewater infrastructure in Pohnpei; and to support economic growth and poverty reduction in Chuuk through improvements to the electrical power sector.

Description of Outcome Improved public and environmental health in Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Yap states
Progress Toward Outcome

in Pohnpei is benefiting the 6,200 residents of Kolonia (Pohnpei) through improved sewage treatment and water quality at the Kolonia Port and less frequent overflows from the Kolonia sewage network.

Improvements to the electricity supply on Weno Island in Chuuk is providing reliable and continuous electricity to more than 95% of residents of Weno (approximately 16,000).

The rehabilitation and expansion of the Gagil-Tomil water supply is providing a safe and reliable water supply to the 1,500 residents of Tomil-Gagil. A contract to expand the water supply to Maap, which is currently un-serviced is expected to be complete in early 2015.

Description of Project Outputs

Reliable electricity supply on Weno Island

Rehabilitated and expanded water supplies in Gagil Tomil and Maap in Yap State.

Improved sewage collection and treatment systems in Kolonia, Pohpei.

Safe water supplies to selected communities in Kosrae.

Status of Implementation Progress (Outputs, Activities, and Issues)

Kolonia sewage treatment plant and major sewage pump stations were commissioned in February 2014. A management of the upgraded and augmented Kolonia sewage treatment plant is ongoing. Rehabilitation of the Kolonia sewerage network was completed in August 2012.

Chuuk - Two 1.145MW diesel-fired generators were commissioned in February 2012. Upgrading of the entire Weno electricity distribution system is 90% complete and is expected to be fully completed by March 2015.

Yap Works to upgrade and expand the Gagil-Tomil water supply system were commissioned in March 2012. Works to develop new water sources and to expand the water supply to Maap (to service approximately 1,200 people) are expected to be completed by March 2015.

Kosrae A contract to rehabilitate the Utwe water supply was awarded in December 2013. The works are expected to be commissioned in May 2015. Support to establish and strengthen the Kosrae utility Authority water operations is ongoing.

Minor land acquisition has been undertaken in Chuuk, Kosrae and Yap for project components. Currently, the project has no resettlement issues.

No land acquisition was required for project components in Pohnpei.
