Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy | Over the past several decades, the performance of emerging market economies has been impressive, with their share in global GDP increasing from 20% in 1990 to 39% in 2013. Emerging market economies have become a major driver of the global economy and growth, particularly since the global financial crisis. As a consequence, the relevance of challenges faced by emerging economies is no longer confined within their own boundaries, and their policy responses are increasingly affecting other countries, both developed and developing, and the world in general. Emerging market economies' participation in global discussions on issues related to trade, investment, and finance has also increased significantly in recent years, and their influence will continue to grow. Focusing on about 80 emerging market economies from across the world, the EMF provides a platform for substantive discussions among emerging economies on select common issues and on reaching actionable solutions and conclusions. In 2014, for example, the EMF focused on the following issues: (a) the Global Financial Crisis; (b) Asia and the World Economy; (c) State of Global Emerging Markets; (d) Study of Long-term Perspective for Emerging Markets; (e) Challenges of Middle Income Countries; (f) Africa; and (g) Emerging Markets and Global Economic Governance. Participants to the annual EMF meetings have included former and current heads of governments, central bank governors and their deputies, ministers and their deputies, leaders of multilateral organizations, corporate CEOs, and heads of think tanks, many of which are from Asia and the Pacific. Such mix of participants brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the issues being considered and ensures that they are able to use their influence to implement the conclusions agreed upon during the meetings. The EMF has been an effective and useful forum for knowledge sharing, and ADB has partnered and collaborated with EMF for these knowledge sharing events. The ADB shares the chairmanship of the Forum with four others. ADB support for previous EMF global meetings included funding the participation of resource speakers and DMC policy makers, as well as covering some meeting costs. This S-RDTA will support ADB's continued partnership with EMF during its annual global meetings in 2015 and 2016. |
