Chashma Right Bank Irrigation Project, Pakistan
TOUGH LIFE Before the Project, only 60% of the rural population received potable water; the rest relied on ponded water, which is often stagnant.
Background
The Chashma
Right Bank Irrigation Project in Pakistan commenced in 1978 and comprises
three stages, including construction of a major irrigation network. Stage I
was completed in December 1986 and Stage II in June 1992. Work on Stage
III began in September 1993 and will be completed in December 2002.
Under the Project, a 274-kilometer canal is being built along the Indus River,
beginning at the existing Chashma Barrage. The Project also includes the construction
of 72 distribution canals, 64 cross-drainage structures, 118 bridges, onfarm
facilities, and agricultural and livestock extension activities.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has been the main financier of the US$454
million project. ADB has funded US$299 million (66% of the total), and Germany
through Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) has provided US$40 million (9%).
The Government has provided US$115 million (25%). The Stage III project is now
98% physically completed. The loan closing date has been extended to 31 December
2003 at the request of the Government.
