People's Republic of China/Global Environment Facility (PRC/GEF) Partnership on Land Degradation in Dryland Ecosystems

Land degradation is a severe and increasing problem in PRC, with an estimated 40% of PRC affected by moderate to severe erosion, mostly in the north and west. At the local level, land degradation is a crucial contributory factor underlying rural poverty.
The Government of PRC recognizes the severity of this problem and prioritized environmental protection in the development of its ambitious Western Development Strategy.
The Government of PRC has requested ADB to take a lead role in preparing a PRC/GEF Partnership on Land Degradation in Dryland Ecosystems to support the development and implementation of a 10 year program to combat land degradation in western PRC.
The partnership will operate under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Operational Program (OP) 12 on Integrated Ecosystem Management, which is ideally suited to overlay global benefits onto the Western Development Strategy,
as well as blending external and domestic finance for sustainable development with GEF resources for the global environment, including biodiversity, carbon sequestration and land and water conservation.
