ADB Support

Under its overarching objective of Poverty Reduction, ADB's country strategy for PRC has a major thrust on environmental sustainability, ecosystems, and natural resource management. The main focal areas include

  • building institutional capacity
  • improving policy, legal, regulatory, and management systems
  • promoting cleaner technologies
  • supporting the utilization of economic instruments for protection of the environment and the conservation of natural resources
  • promoting environmentally sustainable agricultural and natural resources management practices

Following the May 1999 decision by the GEF Council to expand opportunities for Regional Development Banks in GEF implementation, ADB can submit project concepts directly for GEF pipeline entry and directly receive GEF project preparatory grants, providing ADB with an expanded role in the implementation of GEF projects. In light of this, the Government of PRC asked ADB to take the lead in preparing the PRC/GEF Partnership.

A Steering Committee has been established for the Partnership.
