Waterlogging and salinity are serious environmental problems associated with irrigation in the Indus basin. A high water table inhibits root growth and therefore reduces crop yields. The semiarid climate conditions prevailing in Pakistan also lead to salts accumulation in the root zone, further reducing the yields. Low irrigation efficiency coupled with inadequate drainage is the primary cause of waterlogging and salinity in Pakistan.
