This paper on Urban Poverty in Asia looks at the different dimensions of poverty, both income and non-income, in Asia, its two main regions, adding therewith a brief account of who and what class of people are affected most by poverty and deprivation. The paper analyses the effect of recent urbanization and GDP growth trends -- which distinguish Asia from other regions -- on poverty, simultaneously exploring what other factors may have affected poverty levels in Asia. It delves into the key features of urban poverty in selected Asian countries, and looks at the public policy responses and initiatives that Asian countries have taken to address issues of the access of the urban poor to services, livelihood, and shelter, and social security systems.
