Protected Area Management and Wildlife Conservation Project - Sri Lanka
BackgroundIn 1997, as part of the country strategy agreed between the Government of Sri Lanka and ADB, ADB approved a Project Preparatory Technical Assistance (PPTA) grant to formulate a project in Sri Lanka to
Subsequently, the project was found to be eligible, in principle, for co-financing by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The World Bank, as a GEF implementing agency, agreed to jointly process the project with ADB. An additional technical assistance financed by the GEF was mobilized in October 1999, to modify the project design to be consistent with GEF eligibility criteria and to initiate a policy and institutional reform agenda that was identified during PPTA factfinding. The Government of the Netherlands also agreed to co-finance the project, given its strategic focus on assisting in the environment sector in Sri Lanka. The PPTA ended in May 2000 with ADB, GEF, and the Government of the Netherlands reaching an understanding with the Government of Sri Lanka on the project's design and accompanying policy dialogue.
