Mongolia

Mongolia has a population of around 2.5 million, with approximately 650,000 students. In its 8-17 year old group, the net enrolment rate is about 89% with kindergarten much lower at 36%. It has around 700 schools and just over 20,000 teachers, of which around 80% are female.

It faces a number of constraints such as the scattered population, poverty, cold weather that pushes up education costs for heating, and the provision of dormitories. It is grappling with many issues including sustaining quality, effectively deploying staff, addressing gender school population, and teacher imbalances.

Mongolia has a 2000-2005 Education Strategy and is currently implementing government legislation that sets up performance and resourcing agreements between levels of government.
