ADB assistance to the Lao PDR focuses on agriculture, natural resources, and rural development; education; energy; and water and other municipal infrastructure.
The overarching objective of ADB's current country partnership strategy for the Lao PDR is inclusive and sustainable economic growth with associated poverty reduction. Inclusive growth focuses on rural areas, where the majority of the country’s poor resides. Growth is pursued by developing road and energy infrastructure, enhancing value chains, improving access to markets and social services, and forging stronger rural–urban linkages. Sustainable growth in rural areas is supported through improved natural resources management.
ADB remains one of the country's largest multilateral financiers. As of 31 December 2016, ADB had provided $2.52 billion in loans, grants and technical assistance to the Lao PDR.
