Transport is the largest and fastest-growing sector of ADB's operations. Its share of total public sector lending rose from 16% in the 1970s to 20% in the 1990s and to 40% for 2000-2010. The roads subsector comprised three-quarters of lending, followed by railways as the second-largest subsector. ADB funding support has assisted countries to build the infrastructure needed for economic growth and introduce institutional reforms for sounder planning, operations, and asset maintenance.
In line with the directional targets outlined in the Sustainable Transport Initiative Operational Plan, ADB is developing a more balanced portfolio to meet the changing demands of DMCs with a significant expansion of lending for urban transport and railway projects.
