Description

In Hebei province, People's Republic of China, coverage rates for urban environmental services are inadequate and pollution levels are high. Inadequate potable water supplies, solid waste management and wastewater collection are acute problems in many small cities and towns. The Hebei Small Cities and Towns Development Demonstration Sector Project aims to improve urban environment and improved public health and quality of life for the urban residents in counties of small cities and towns. Zhengding is one of the counties that are badly affected by lack of urban environmental services due to high level of urbanization.

Zhengding county has a population of 442,788 people and about 23.9% live in urban areas. This PDA helped implement a school and community-based information and education program which aims to promote environmental awareness on water supply and sanitation through advocacy, information and education, and training and capacity development of local communities and local governments. The objective was to build capacities of communities and schools in order to facilitate changes of behavior and personal attitudes among people to promote better understanding of the linkage between protecting the environment and maintenance of good health.

  • Increased awareness of children from five selected schools and communities surrounding the school on public hygiene, water conservation and sanitation
  • Minor rehabilitation of water and sanitation facilities in 5 selected schools
