On 4 February 2013, the Director General, Independent Evaluation received the following response from the Managing Director General on behalf of the Management.

This Learning Curves discusses the evaluation of ADB’s support for achieving the MDGs. It assesses how Asia and the Pacific are advancing the MDGs, the effectiveness of ADB’s support to developing member countries for achieving them, and the emerging issues for a new development roadmap for the region. It also seeks to answer a question that will be crucial for that agenda: does setting goals make a difference to development results? 

ONGOING EVALUATION. An operational review in phase 1 of this evaluation will examine the effectiveness of ADB’s approach to support the strengthening and effective application of country safeguard systems by its developing member countries, and the degree and effectiveness of the implementation of safeguard requirements for financial intermediary projects.

The 2012 evaluation highlights some of the successes and shortcomings of disaster risk reduction in Asia and the Pacific, particularly through case studies in Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Pakistan, and identifies areas for improvement.

ONGOING EVALUATION. This thematic evaluation study will assess the strategic relevance of technical assistance within ADB and look at how technical assistance can better contribute to development effectiveness. The study aims to generate findings and recommendations to guide ADB in its future use of technical assistance.

On 15 May 2013, the Director General, Independent Evaluation Department, received the following response from the Managing Director General on behalf of the Management on the Thematic Evaluation Study on ADB’s Support for Achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

This report validates the findings of the CPS Final Review, assess the quality of the self-evaluation and identify lessons and recommendations to improve the design and implementation of the upcoming CPS, as well as the quality and accountability of future self-evaluations.

ONGOING EVALUTION. The evaluation will examine ADB’s governance policies and plans and appraisal of its governance operations over the past decade.  By evaluating ADB’s governance experience and drawing on lessons and evidence from the wider global experience, the evaluation will provide guidance to strengthen the effectiveness of ADB’s future work in this area. The evaluation findings will feed directly into the 2014 midterm review of Asian Development Fund XI.
