ADB's Work in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a founding member of ADB. To date, ADB has committed 482 public sector loans, grants, and technical assistance totaling $11.2 billion to Sri Lanka. Cumulative loan and grant disbursements to Sri Lanka amount to $9.42 billion. These were financed by regular and concessional ordinary capital resources, the Asian Development Fund, and other special funds. ADB’s ongoing sovereign portfolio in Sri Lanka includes 41 loans and 1 grant worth $3.64 billion.

In 2022, ADB provided a series of interventions as emergency assistance to help address the immediate challenges from the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

Forecasts are based on ADB's flagship publication, the Asian Development Outlook. Updated four times a year, it analyzes economic and development issues in developing countries in Asia and the Pacific.

Development indicators for Sri Lanka, including a selection of economic, environmental, and social indicators used globally to track progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.

Results achieved are aggregate amounts of outputs and outcomes from operations reported in project completion reports and extended annual review reports circulated for the year.

Cofinancing operations enable ADB’s financing partners, governments or their agencies, multilateral financing institutions, and commercial organizations to participate in financing ADB projects.

Established in 1997, Sri Lanka Resident Mission's (SLRM) primary responsibilities include:

  • Initiate and maintain dialogue with the government on issues that are relevant to ADB operations in the country
  • Strengthen project processing and portfolio management
  • Prepare the country partnership strategy and country operations business plan
  • Strengthen working relations with development partners, academia, and the private sector
  • Plan and prepare ADB's economic and sector work for Sri Lanka
  • Promote external relations and disseminate information about ADB and its operations
