Railways

Railways is ADB's second largest subsector among transport initiatives.

Bangladesh, People’s Republic of China, India and Uzbekistan have received substantial assistance from ADB to further develop railway systems. ADB has supported innovative local railway and new line construction, with positive effects on poverty levels in hinterland areas.

However, ADB acknowledges the difficulty many railway administrations have in adapting to rapidly changing market circumstances. ADB continues to work with these countries, exploring ways on making the infrastructure and railway administration more conducive to growth and economic sustainability.
