Roads and Highways

Road transport was identified by ADB's Medium-Term Strategy of 2006-2008 as a core operational sector.

Since 1970, roads and road transport projects have accounted for 75% of all transport sector lending by ADB.

Lending has supported expressway and highway networks that can provide the life blood of a country, connecting remote and unserved regions with vital markets and services. Rural road projects are included ensuring that people even in previously inaccessible villages are given access to all weather roads.

ADB's road projects are careful to build in road safety components and address risks such as transmission of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases.

ADB has also provided extensive technical assistance for road development. These help governments prepare their road development projects, including design, feasibility, and impact, as well as promote policy dialogue and reforms in the road sector.

To address post-project road maintenance, ADB helps its developing member countries in promoting management and institutional reforms, fostering changes in policies, training, procurement, and road information systems.
