Asian Tsunami Fund: Appeal to the Donor Community
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) created a multi-donor grant fund known as the Asian Tsunami Fund (ATF) to help meet the financing needs associated with the medium-term rehabilitation and reconstruction of the tsunami-affected areas. ADB capitalized the ATF with an initial subscription of $312 million from its own resources, followed by an additional $288 million subscription, for a total of $600 million. Following the initial $600 million contribution, contributions have been received from two Governments. The Government of Australia contributed $3.7 million equivalent for reconstruction work in Sri Lanka. The Government of Luxembourg contributed $1.0 million to rehabilitate irrigation schemes in the Indonesian provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra. While the ATF remains operational, requests from eligible recipients/tsunami-affected countries for funds to be allocated under the ATF has been shortened from the initial 18 months from the date when the Fund was approved in February 2005, to 12 months. Thus applications for funding from tsunami-affected countries closed as of December 2005. Status Report on the Asian Tsunami Fund (July-December 2008) [ PDF: 66kb | 15 pages ].
