Indonesia: Preliminary Damage and Loss Assessment

Indonesia: Preliminary Damage and Loss Assessment [ PDF: 3,005Kb | 128 pages ] presents the findings of an initial evaluation of the impact of the 26 December 2004 tsunami in Aceh and North Sumatra, Indonesia.

The report, issued on 19 January 2005, is the product of a collaborative effort involving the Government of Indonesia and the international donor community. ADB fielded a team of experts to Indonesia shortly after the tsunami disaster. Their consultations with representatives of government, the international community, nongovernmental organizations and others in Indonesia and elsewhere fed into this report.

The findings present a stark look at the destructive power of nature. As of 14 January 2005

  • 110,229 people were known to be dead
  • 12,132 missing, and
  • 703,518 displaced.
On top of this human tragedy the total economic loss is estimated at $4.45 billion, some 97% of Aceh’s GDP.

Indonesia: Notes on Reconstruction [ PDF: 2,014Kb | 211 pages ] is an accompanying volume that sketches out the work required to rebuild the devastated regions of Indonesia.
