15,000 die each year from air pollution in Bangladesh
- The World Bank reports that air pollution in Bangladesh cause about 15,000 deaths annually.
- About 200 to 800 million dollars a year can be saved if air pollution in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Khulna was reduced to acceptable limits.
- Lead levels in Dhaka are estimated at 465 nanograms/m3 (one of the highest in the world).
- Amount of suspended particulate matter is four times the permissible level.
- Lead levels among Bangladeshi children continued to be higher than WHO recommendations despite the introduction of unleaded gasoline.
