Sulfur dioxide (SO2)

Sulfur dioxide is formed when fuel containing sulfur is burned.

High concentrations of sulfur dioxide can result in temporary breathing impairment for asthmatic children and adults who are active outdoors.

Short-term exposure:
  • reduced lung function
  • wheezing
  • chest tightness
  • shortness of breath
Long-term exposure:
  • respiratory illness
  • alterations in the lungs' defenses
  • aggravation of existing cardiovascular disease

People affected include children, the elderly, and those with cardiovascular disease or chronic lung disease.
