Elements of a comprehensive vehicle pollution control strategy
Reducing air pollution from vehicles requires a comprehensive strategy. Generally, the goal of a motor vehicle emissions control program is to reduce emissions to the degree reasonably necessary to achieve healthy air quality as rapidly as possible while staying within technological, economic, and social limits.
A comprehensive strategy includes four key components:
- Increasingly stringent emissions standards for new vehicles
- Specifications for clean fuels
- Programs to assure proper maintenance of in-use vehicles
- Traffic and demand management
