Hong Kong, China: Reducing in-use vehicle emissions

Comprehensive vehicle emissions control program, 2000-2005

In 2000, a comprehensive air quality program was initiated to reduce particulate emissions (PM) by 80% and NOx by 30% toward the end of 2005.

  • diesel taxi owners -- and eventually light bus owners -- to cover the cost of switching to cleaner alternatives
  • owners of older, pre-Euro diesel vehicles to install devices that trap pollutants
