Philippines: Public awareness
- Text-Usok ("Text-Smoke")*
- Filipinos can now report smoke-belching vehicles to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) using the text messaging feature of their cellphones. To send a text message, they simply key in "USOK <space> plate number <space> location sighted <space> vehicle description" and send it to "2366." If a vehicle is reported at least five times, the LTO will require the owner to bring in his vehicle for emission testing. This project is supported by the Partnership for Clean Air.
* Available only to Globe Telecom and Smart Communications cellphone subscribers
Update: The Far Eastern Economic Review reported that since early June, the program has netted more than 30,000 text messages with 1,000 smoke-belching vehicles liable. There have been 400 summonses sent with 120 turning out to be wrongly addressed. All in all, only 12 vehicle owners responded and only two cars have been taken off the road.
- DENR-McDonald's Tie-Up
- DENR and McDonald’s are aiming to generate public awareness by posting air quality messages on the fast-food chain's paper tray mats. DENR will provide the messages, concepts, and artistic and visual design of the tray mats, while McDonald's will produce and distribute these paper mats to its 287 branches nationwide.
