Study on Air Quality in Jakarta: Future Trends, Health Impacts, Economic Value, and Policy Options

To support the integrated action plan for Jakarta, an assessment of Jakarta's air quality was conducted from 24 September 2001 to 24 March 2002. The objective of this study was to provide policymakers with sound information on the air pollution levels in the city and the impact of different countermeasures.

The 1998 ambient air quality monitoring results suggest that NOx, CO, and THC are a serious problem in almost all areas of Jakarta. PM10 was a problem in some areas. But in all cases, motor vehicles were the biggest source of these pollutants.

If the city plans to meet DKI Ambient Air Quality Standards (AAQS) for annual average, it will need to reduce these pollutants by 50% of the 1998 emission load. This will work only if the area surrounding Jakarta also meets DKI AAQS, and the emission load from industrial and domestic sources does not go beyond the assumptions made in this study.
