Experts’ Consultation Meeting on the
Asian Water Development Outlook

Meeting Report

The Asian Water Development Outlook (AWDO) is ADB’s new publication that will serve as investment decisionmaking guide for top-level leaders and policy makers. Since April, an AWDO Team has been preparing the AWDO’s objectives, key messages, and broad contents.

This consultation meeting gathered water experts from across Asia-Pacific to discuss and debate on the following aspects of the AWDO draft report: overall thrust, key messages, issues, and way forward recommendations.

PARTICIPANTS

The meeting was attended by 50 participants, composed of

  • AWDO team of experts
  • government representatives from Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Fiji, Pakistan, People’s Republic of China, Sri Lanka, and Viet Nam
  • water champions from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Philippines, and Thailand
  • Vice Chairs of the APWF Governing Council (GC)
  • representatives from the Asia-Pacific Water Forum (APWF) partner institutions World Health Organization, UN-HABITAT, Singapore Public Utilities Board, and Asia Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC)
  • other participants from Japan International Cooperation Agency, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, Japan Water Works Agency, United States Environmental Protection Agency, Lee Kuan Yew School, and University of New Hampshire

Main issues in the Asia-Pacific water sector
  • Sanitation and water resources issues should be covered in addition to water supply services
  • Contrasting demographic issues in societies, such as ageing as in the case of Japan or using youth as agents for change in China and India when planning water systems, should be highlighted

  • “Good water economics is good politics” message should emerge from the report
