Pacific Partnership Initiative on Sustainable Water Management
Establishment of the Pacific Water and Climate Resource Center


BACKGROUND

The Pacific Partnership Initiative on Sustainable Water Management between ADB and the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) aims to improve the coordination of water activities among Pacific Island Countries (PICs). ADB and SOPAC agree to

  • strengthen regional cooperation
  • improve water resources management in extreme climates
  • follow-up on the initiatives set at the 3rd World Water Forum (WWF)

One component of the partnership is the establishment of the Pacific Water and Climate Resource Center.

OBJECTIVES

Establish a regional coordination and resource center for water and climate in the Pacific that will

PROPOSED ACTIVITIES

The proposed resource center has lined up a set of activities for 2005-2006:

  • Promote the results of the DWC to national governments, stakeholders, civil society and development agencies
  • Promote the implementation of the Pacific RAP by lobbying to the Pacific Rim donors and their water & climate resource centers to focus their resources, programs and outputs on the technical needs of the Pacific Islands
  • Utilize the Joint Caribbean-Pacific Program for Action launched at the 3rd WWF to ensure south-south transfer of knowledge, expertise and information
  • Secure institutional and financial commitments to implement the Pacific HYCOS project in the Pacific region
  • Provide technical support (advice, training materials, wise practice and human resources) to the PICs on water resources management in climatic extremes
  • Identify ication and establishment of resources and institutional measures for the long-term support and of the implementation and Coordination Unit.

  • Fully functional and effective Pacific Water & Climate Resource Center
  • Establishment of a Water and Climate Focal Group
  • Promotion of Pacific HYCOS
  • Promotion of South-south transfer of knowledge

  • Brochure on Water & Climate
  • Annual Report
