Pilot and Demonstration Activity: Bangladesh
Assessing the Impact of Climate Change on Major Non-Tidal Rivers

This PDA aims to assess the changes in Bangladesh’s non-tidal rivers resulting from the effects of climate change.

Project site Bangladesh
Cost US$ 49,200
Status Ongoing
Approval date May 2009
Completion date -
Category Basin Management
ADB officer Kenichi Yokoyama
Partner Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services

Bangladesh is among the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, particularly its great rivers. Observations by the Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) reveal that the Jamuna and Padma rivers have widened more than three kilometers in the past 30 years, affecting 130,000 hectares of floodplains and displacing more than one million people.

This PDA supports a field research to assess the impact of climate change on the morphology of major non-tidal rivers and its consequences on people and the environment. It will assess the impact of large-scale changes in major rivers and risks of river widening or instability, specifically on existing river training structures and infrastructures near riverbanks.

  • Better understanding on the morphological processes of the major non-tidal rivers of Bangladesh
  • Policy makers taking necessary actions in minimizing loses in case of unfavorable morphological changes
  • Increased support to disaster risk management
  • Better trained engineers in planning and designing river training structures
