US Interorganizational Committee on Principles and Guidelines for Social Impact Assessment

The 2003 version of Principles and Guidelines for Social Impact Assessment (SIA) in the USA provides guidance for the conduct of SIA within the context of the US National Environmental Policy Act of 1970. Guidelines are integrated within six principles:

  • Achieve extensive understanding of local and regional settings to be affected by the action or policy
  • Focus on key elements of the human environment
  • Identify research methods, assumptions and significance
  • Provide quality information for use in decision-making
  • Ensure that any environmental justice issues are fully described and analyzed
  • Undertake evaluation/monitoring and mitigation
