Convention on Biological Diversity

One of the key agreements adopted at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit was the Convention on Biological Diversity . The full text of the Convention can be accessed is available on the CBD website and as of July 2004 had 188 parties. This pact among the vast majority of the world's governments sets out 'commitments for maintaining the world's ecological underpinnings as we go about the business of economic development'. The Convention establishes three main goals:

  • the conservation of biological diversity,
  • the sustainable use of its components, and
  • the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources.

The Sixth Conference of the Parties (COP6) of CBD considered the recommendations of the World Commission on Dams at its meeting in the Hague in April 2002. In relation to the subject of Biological Diversity of Inland Waters, it

'Takes note of the recommendations contained in the report of the World Commission on Dams in regard to the implementation of the programme of work on biological diversity of inland water ecosystems'. (Item 16.A.3)
