World Health Organization - Submission on Human Health and Dams

In its submission to the WCD on Human Health and Dams, the World Health Organization points to the two sides of health impacts (section 1.1):

'Through their potential to alleviate poverty they can contribute significantly to the enhancement of human health'.

'The intended development objectives of dams, including poverty reduction, are invariably accompanied by a range of unintended impacts on the natural environment and on human communities'.

'It is this observation of health benefit inequity that forms a central theme in the present submission. Informed action can protect vulnerable groups against increased health risks and ensure a more equitable distribution of benefits, including health benefits'.

The submission details:

  • Human health issues related to dam construction
  • Options for preventative or health promoting actions
  • Recommendations for improving good practice
  • Health impact assessment - procedures and methods
