Long Term Strategic Framework

Addressing environmental sustainability is one of three cross-cutting strategic themes of ADB's Long Term Strategic Framework and 'includes putting environmental considerations in the forefront of all development decision making and planning…and not only stopping but reversing the enormous and costly degradation and damage that have already occurred'. (LTSF, para 26)

This approach has been adopted in response to the realization that 'For too long, the environmental impact of development was ignored in most parts of Asia and the Pacific; when policymakers did try to adopt regulations and standards, they were all too often badly designed, inadequately implemented, and easily flouted - a major governance issue'. (LTSF, para 56).
