Study on multiplier effects of dams

Methodological issues and preliminary results of case studies on the Multiplier Effects and Income Distribution of Dams was presented to the World Bank's Water Week in 2003. The study:

'focuses solely on indirect economic impacts and the subset of social impacts linked with changes in household expenditure, income, and its distribution. It considers as direct all economic impacts descending from the construction of the dam, the water stored and other services provided by the structure, and changes in flow regimes regardless of whether these impacts were initially planned or not. Indirect and induced economic impacts are those deriving from linkages between these direct consequences and the rest of the economy. The study (i) discusses the multi-sector modeling techniques used to assess indirect impacts, (ii) presents their ex-post evaluation in four case studies -- three for large dams and one for small check dams, and (iii) highlights the relevance of measuring multiplier impacts to guide investment decisions on dams'.

Four case studies are presented: Bhakra Dam (India), Aswan High Dam (Egypt), Sobradinho (Brazil), and Bunga Village check dams (India).
