Earthquakes and dams

Over the past 30 years, design criteria for earthquake resistance have been covered in the following ICOLD Bulletins.

27 A review of earthquake resistant design of dams, 1975
46 Seismicity and dam design, 1983
52 Earthquake analysis for dams, 1986
62 Recommendations - Inspection of dams after earthquakes - Guidelines, 1988
120 Design features of dams to resist seismic ground motion, 2001
123 Seismic design and evaluation of structures appurtenant to dams, 2002

Reservoir induced earthquakes are also an important issue to consider. Even relatively minor quakes, as experienced during filling of the Katse Dam in Lesotho in 1996, cause significant public unrest.

Since the Asian tsunami in December 2004, there have been increased calls for improved systems for early warning of downstream populations and emergency assistance for the aftermath of any dam break, whether caused by earthquakes or other factors.
