Environmental Product Declaration - ISO 14025

An innovative approach to certifying the sustainability of hydropower generation to ISO standard 14025 TR was conducted by Statkraft, owners of the Trollheim Power Station in Norway.

'As increasing numbers of customers in Europe seek to purchase "green" electricity, demonstrating hydropowerïs environmental friendliness can increase its marketability and economic value. In Norway, Statkraft SF has prepared an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for the hydroelectricity produced at its 130-MW Trollheim Power Station to document the effect of the plant's construction and operation on the environment. Transferred external costs estimates are used as a supplement to the Life Cycle Asssessment used in EPDs. The company plans to prepare similar declarations for its entire hydro fleet'.

An outline of the process is described in a paper by Torblaa E., Schei T., Navrud S., & Riise J. Documenting Hydro's Environmental Advantages and a paper presented at the UNEP-DDP Workshop on Financing Dams and Sustainable Development entitled 'Environmental Product Declaration (EPD, Type III) A tool for comparison of energy sources and carriers - The Trollheim Experience'
