Emerging policies in the private sector and export credit agencies

Over the past five years, major initiatives have been taken by the private sector and the export credit agencies to harmonize their social and environmental policies in regard of their involvement in infrastructure projects.

In the case of private sector financing institutions, a large number of banks and others have signed up to the Equator Principles, thereby linking their approach to environmental and social assessment to the policies of the International Finance Corporation for project finance of more than $50million.

In 2003, Export Credit Agencies agreed to strengthen their common approaches to environmental policies.
