IUCN Water and Nature Initiative

The main goal of the IUCN Water and Nature Initiative 'is the mainstreaming of an ecosystem approach into catchment policies, planning and management.' As dam projects are a primary means through which river water is regulated and allocated, their management is a key feature of the Initiative.

It encompasses the following principles:

  • participative: to empower all stakeholders to participate in water management
  • strategic: to have the maximum possible effect
  • transparent: to have transparency in decision-making and management
  • catalytic: to influence, facilitate and initiate action
  • innovative: to develop knowledge within projects and share it with the widest audience possible

Projects in the WANI can be viewed on IUCN website.
